Hey! If you are here I bet you are thinking about doing your very first Whole30, which is super exciting. If you are like most Whole30-ers, you might be a little nervous, or not quite sure where to start…but you are in the right place. I am Kelly; I'm a registered dietitian, and certified Whole30 coach here to give you three tips on how to master your first Whole30.
Tip #1: Take advantage of free resources on Whole30.com
My first tip is to check out the rules and free resources on Whole30.com. There's tons of awesome information, and when you have a really solid foundation, you can go into your decisions with confidence. Knowledge is power, so check out these resources! There's info such as a sneaky guide to sugars or how to dine out. I even keep a PDF of the common additives on my phone, so if I'm ever out at the grocery store and I'm not quite sure if something's allowed or not I can quick pull it up and proceed with confidence. Take advantage of all these awesome resources on Whole30.com.
Tip #2: Plan ahead, especially for unexpected circumstances
My second tip is to plan ahead….and not just plan your meals and your grocery list, but most importantly, plan for the unexpected. Life happens. You might find yourself stuck late at work, or maybe you had a really bad day and you usually dive into a bowl of ice cream. So plan for different ways you can get through these obstacles. For example, maybe keep some compliant snacks in your desk drawer at work to save for days you know you might be running late. Maybe have a friend on speed dial, or plan a route to go for a walk or something like that; different ways to deal with those stressful days. Plan ahead, and plan for those unexpected circumstances.
Tip #3: Think about your “why”
My third tip for you is to think about your “why.” Why are you doing the Whole30? I challenge you to think about a “why” that does not have to do with the scale or weight loss. The Whole30 is so much more than that. For you, it might be, you want to have enough energy to play with your kids. Maybe it's you want to be free of your sugar cravings. Think about your “why”, and set a reminder. Maybe you could put a picture of your kids on your phone, and every time you log into your phone you see a picture of them, and you were just reminded why you're doing this. Maybe you remove that candy dish at work, and instead put a picture of you and your family smiling and happy. Every time you want to reach for that candy you instead see your goal…to be happy, and to be free of that sugar craving.
You got this!
Those are my tips for you for how to master your first Whole30. Again, check all the rules and the resources on Whole30.com. Take advantage; knowledge is power. My second tip is to plan ahead, and most importantly plan for those unexpected circumstances. My third tip is to think about your “why” and look for a deeper meaning than just numbers on the scale. The Whole30 is tough, I know, but you got this!
